Powder coating of zinc die-castings

A powder coating of zinc die-castings provides a protective, optically attractive surface with good covering properties, that also hides any imperfections on the object surface.

Process problems: powder specific parameters
Problems only occur with powder coatings if the wrong process temperature has been chosen and/or the baking (kiln/oven) time is too long.

The process temperature varies with the type of powder used and is as follows:

Epoxy powder

140-160 °C

Polyester powder

160-200 °C

Matt black polyester powder

200-210 °C

The lowest temperature sufficient for the particular powder prescribed should be carefully selected, because at a temperature of between 10 - 20 degrees above the one prescribed the problems rapidly occur, principally in the form of bubble formation.

The right collaborator
To avoid problems and ensure maximum quality it is imperative to choose a collaborator with the appropriate know-how and experience of the powder/zinc combination as the process parameters are different to those of other cast or moulded products (e.g. steel).
